Revelatory
from Peter McCarthy on 10/10/2022
I have had a stock 2016 P3 with Exact for just over a year. Two months ago I added my first mod, two sets of the SRM sub-platter damper kit, which improved the sound quality noticeably. Then I added a Neo TT PSU, which to my ears gave subtle improvements to soundstage depth, instrument placement and tonality. Not as much as I had hoped for, tbh, so when looking at this counterweight I was a touch apprehensive as to its claimed benefits. However, as the damping kit worked so well, I bought it.
I've struggled to do much else except listen to LPs since installing it. The difference is surprisingly large. The instructions describe sound quality improvements thusly: 'more dynamic and informative midrange... tighter, lower bass response... extended hf response- not brightness... increased fine detail and image depth.' I am aware of the possibility of confirmation bias and response-framing language, but this is not hype. It's all true. I've been listening to some LPs I thought weren't especially well mastered and am hearing them anew: image depth, detail, tonality, all far better. Good recording are now very good. I now prefer my TT to my CDP (a Saturn R) even at high frequencies where previously the CDP had the advantage in clarity and tonal accuracy.
According to Stuart of SRM (who responds quickly to emails and is very helpful), the Azure upgrade will render my P3 superior to a P6, and the mods I have will carry over to the Azure. After enjoying the remarkable improvement delivered by the HLC, I'm inclined to believe him! Additionally, the idea of bettering a P6 sonically for a total outlay of less, has a certain appeal in these straitened times.
