Phono Cartridge Tune-Up Kit

£24.95
Price incl. VAT, plus delivery

Any one of the items in the kit will make your cartridge sound better - together they make a tremendous improvement, regardless of whether your turntable cost £100 or £10,000! The kit comprises the following essential items: 1. Two Point Cartridge Alignment Gauge. Accurate and hard wearing, this plastic laminated gauge will allow you to perfectly align the cartridge in the headshell, achieving the minimum possible tracking error over the disc. An incorrectly positioned cartridge causes tracking distortion and will irretrievably damage your vinyl, so this is definitely worth checking and adjusting. Complete with comprehensive instructions. 2. Pro Cartridge Mounting Kit. High quality non-magnetic stainless steel allen head fixings, so you can mount the cartridge securely in the headshell. Cartridges mounted with poor quality fixings (such as those bundled with most cartridges) will cause audible loss of information. This is our latest and most comprehensive 43 piece kit which comes complete with: 2 x 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20mm M2.5 bolts, 2 x 10 and 16mm M2 bolts, 8 x M2.5 and 4 x M2 nuts, 8 x M2.5mm and 4 x M2 washers, Allen wrench and quality British made miniature Combination Spanner. The reason the kit comes with so many different length bolts is that you should always use the shortest ones that will accommodate your cartridge, to avoid adding unnecessary mass. This kit will allow you to properly mount any cartridge to any tonearm. 3. Stylus Cleaning Fluid. This remarkable blue fluid effectively cleans the muck off the stylus (and behind it, where it builds up). Use this regularly for best results. 10ml bottle, complete with soft haired brush. 4. Contact-Z Contact Cleaner. This is aerospace quality fluid with which you should clean the cartridge pins, headshell connections, arm cable connector and phono plugs. Incredibly effective in this situation as you are dealing with very low-level signals, and any contaminates on these surfaces will seriously degrade sound quality. 10ml bottle, complete with six cotton buds and a pipe cleaner – ideal for cleaning the inside surfaces of phono sockets. There is enough in the bottle to clean all the connections in your system – even speaker and mains plugs benefit. The kit comes with in a handy storage box with comprehensive instructions, and we guarantee your turntable will sound far better for it.

If your turntable has not had a service for a few years it needs an oil change! This is the best bearing oil available - known to Audiophiles as 'Black Oil' it contains Molybdenum Disulfide and Graphite. Suitable for all turntables, this makes the bearing quieter, more efficient and drastically reduces wear. 10ml bottle – enough for a minimum of ten oil changes. 6. Turntable Belt and Drive System Cleaning Fluid. Pure Gold – this fluid is specially formulated to clean and degrease these crucial parts of the turntable. If the drive system of the turntable is contaminated it will cause belt slippage which manifests itself as dynamic wow. This type of wow is not necessarily noticeable as pitch instability, but it causes 'smearing' of transient detail, making the deck sound lifeless and lacklustre. Grease gets on to the belt every time you handle it, building up around the motor pulley and the sub-platter or platter rim. This fluid should be used regularly to keep the turntable drive system in perfect order, allowing your deck to sound as dynamic as the day it was built. The kit comes with in a handy storage box with comprehensive instructions, and we guarantee your turntable will sound far better for it.

Hi-Fi News Analogue Test Record

Notify on availability
£29.95
Price incl. VAT, plus delivery

Released on 16th September 2002, the 'Producer's Cut' is the successor to the original HFN Test LP, first pressed in 1996. Len Gregory, The Cartridge Man, who produced the original version, had over the years concluded that there were a number of improvements that could be made to his earlier work which in the four years since it's release had sold an amazing 10,000 copies around the world. He went back to Graham Durham at The Exchange for a new recording session, to re-cut the original tracks, to add a frequency sweep track and to extend the Pink Noise tracks. Then it was off to Pallas in Germany to arrange for production, their best quality Audiophile pressing on 180gm virgin vinyl. The resulting mechanical quality is excellent, flat, stable and quiet, everything that an audiophile pressing should be! In total, there are now seventeen tracks. Side one covers channel identification and phasing, pink noise, and bias settings (Four tracks at increasing amplitudes). Side two contains tracking ability bands at the outside, middle and inside of the disc, cartridge/arm resonance and alignment tests, full frequency (20Hz-20Khz) test and a residual noise test. All bands are separated by locked grooves. The package is completed with the inclusion of a unique, multi-discipline, alignment protractor, a truly universal device that can be used to set up all sizes and types of arm to fine degrees of accuracy, a reprint of the seminal article by John Crabb on the theory and practice of arm/cartridge alignment, and copious sleeve notes to take the user through the set up procedure step by step. This is something that every serious vinyl enthusiast should own. The LP is supplied in a protective polythene outer sleeve and packed in a purpose designed strong LP mailer.

Pro Cartridge Mounting Kit

£11.95
Price incl. VAT, plus delivery

This is our very latest and most comprehensive Pro Cartridge Mounting Kit which comes complete with tools. To extract the ultimate performance from your cartridge it is imperative it is correctly mounted to the headshell. This can only be done with bolts of the correct diameter, length, strength and material. Using inferior fixings such as aluminium, brass or nylon will result in audible loss of information. The mounting bolts and nuts in this kit are non magnetic high strength stainless steel - the only type you should use when fitting a cartridge. The socket head on the bolts allows for easy tightening with the supplied allen key, and the British made miniature combination spanner provides a much safer and easier way to secure the nut than pliers. Incidentally, both ends of the spanner are the same size, so you can use either the closed or open end. The size of the supplied bolts has been carefully chosen - the 6, 8, 10 & 12mm bolts will be perfect for the majority of cartridges on the market. The 16 & 20mm bolts are provided for those really deep bodied cartridges, like some Audio-Technica Moving Coils. You should always use the shortest bolts that will accommodate your cartridge as bolts that are too long add unnecessary mass. We had been aware that certain tonearms (notably some Thorens models) would not accept these industry standard sized bolts, but we were unable to source high quality smaller M2 fixings. We have now, though, and the most popular sizes (10mm & 16mm) are included in the kit. Please note that the spanner included will only fit the larger bolts, so if you use the smaller bolts / nuts you must use a pair of miniature pliers to tighten them. The 43 piece kit comprises: 2 x M2.5 x 6mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2.5 x 8mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2.5 x 10mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2.5 x 12mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2.5 x 16mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2.5 x 20mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2 x 10mm stainless steel allen bolts 2 x M2 x 16mm stainless steel allen bolts 8 x M2.5 stainless steel nuts 8 x M2.5 stainless steel washers 4 x M2 stainless steel nuts 4 x M2 stainless steel washers 1 x 2mm Allen wrench 1 x 1.5mm Allen wrench 1 x Miniature Combination Spanner

Turntable Motor Thrust Bearing

£29.95
Price incl. VAT, plus delivery

This is our very effective motor thrust bearing designed for the Philips / Impex / Premotec motor that powers the superb Rega Planar and Linn Turntables, as well as the majority of other audiophile decks on the market. We also have a slightly different model designed specifically for Thorens motors. These motors have sleeve bearings at the top and bottom and the spindle rides on the bottom sleeve. If you gently move the pulley up and down you will feel a small amount of play between the two. Years ago people discovered that by making the motor ride between the two sleeve bearings (on a pad) improved sound quality by reducing motor noise. Solutions, however, using bits of plastic, springs and grease were haphazard to say the least. This motor thrust bearing is in effect a miniature main bearing, consisting of a phosphor bronze bearing shaft, housing a lubricated 4mm hardened steel ball. This assembly glues on to the base of the motor and the motor spindle rides on the ball, but does not touch the sides of the shaft. The height at which the ball sits in the shaft is adjustable by means of a grub screw, so once mounted you simply tighten the grub screw until the motor spindle is lifted off the bottom motor sleeve. The motor spindle now runs on a proper bearing - and is less noisy! This is an elegant, compact and lightweight solution. It comes complete with the allen wrench needed to adjust it. Any deck using this motor will benefit significantly - even those already fitted with some form of thrust bearing. The quieter the Turntable motor, the lower the noise floor. This is why so many purchasers comment on how much more information they hear after fitting this. You really need to have the deck upside down to fit it (or at least have the motor upside down) but it is very easy to glue it on. Incidentally, my experiments have shown that although the superglue holds it solidly in place, should you wish to remove it, it will snap off with no damage to the motor. It projects around 10mm beneath the motor, so Rega owners will need to drill a small hole in the cover plate. On a suspended sub-chassis turntable there is plenty of clearance.

Universal Acrylic Platter

£59.95
Price incl. VAT, plus delivery

This is a 10mm Clear Acrylic Platter, similar to our Rega fit one, but with a standard spindle diameter centre hole. This makes it eminently suitable for turntables like the Mantra which use a glass platter with this size centre hole. This is also suitable for old but lovely decks like the Transcriptors which do not, in standard form, support the record over the whole playing surface. If you want to use one for this purpose, though, remember that the spindle must be long enough (unlikely) or you'll have to buy an extension spindle. We now have some available for just £9.00 when buying this platter. The advantages of using an acrylic platter as opposed to a glass one have been well documented by reviewers - smoother (less splashy) treble, incredibly transparent midrange and more articulate bass. It sounds more neutral. The platter comes complete with a Platter Damping Ring, which is not bonded to it so you don't have to use it - but it sounds better if you do.
